Andel Oliver has spent the last five years living abroad, the entire time spent in places she doesn’t speak the local language. During a stint in Mauritius, she began painting portraits of local people she knew. This soon became a study of the cultures on the island, an exercise in capturing the subtle differences amongst them, exploring abstract expression. These two forms- abstract expressionism and portraiture- have begun to overlap to define her painting. This time abroad has contextualized life in Africa for her, and she plans to return for good in 2019.
